Ráyo Furuta, hailed as “The Rockstar of the Flute” (Informador de Guadalajara) and “The Prodigy of the
Great Flutist, Carol Wincenc [professor of flute at the Juilliard School]” (San Jose Mercury News), is a
Mexican-Japanese American flutist known for his electrifying stage presence and genre-defying artistry.
With command of classical, contemporary, global, jazz, and pop styles, Furuta has captivated audiences
worldwide.
Officiated as a Cultural Ambassador to the United States at 25, Furuta has performed across Mexico,
Japan, Korea, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Spain, Poland, the Middle East, and North America, with
appearances alongside Yo-Yo Ma’s Silkroad Ensemble, for the United Nations, and at renowned festivals
including Mainly Mozart, Yellowbarn, Okayama, Interharmony, and Saarburg to name only a few. He
tours regularly as a concerto soloist across the globe and recitalist with his long-time duo partner,
Grammy-winning pianist Michelle Cann. His acclaimed Linda Ronstadt Tribute Experience celebrates
Ronstadt’s legacy and Furuta’s bicultural heritage through rock, Latin, mariachi, and folk fusion.
A dedicated chamber musician, Furuta has collaborated with Peter Frankl, Jon Nakamatsu, and members
of the Kronos, Brooklyn Rider, Mendelssohn, and Emerson String Quartets. His passion for global music
has led to performances with celebrated artists such as Sandeep Das (tabla), Vijay Gopal (bansuri),
Ghassan Sahhab (qanun), Van Anh Vo (dan tranh), and Merima Kljuco (accordion), among others.
Furuta is Professor of Flute and Chamber Music at San José State University and has also served as
Visiting Professor of Flute at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He previously spent a decade on faculty at
Santa Clara University, where he was hired at the age of 25 and, in his final year as a full-time professor,
was honored with the Dean’s Distinguished Faculty Award in Social Justice, known as the Francisco
Jiménez Award. Also a celebrated curator, he is the Artistic Director of Chamber Music Silicon Valley.
He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stony Brook University, where he was a Staller Scholar
and was selected as a Distinguished “40 Under 40” Alumni at just 25 years old. At Stony Brook, he
studied with the legendary flutist Carol Wincenc and the Emerson String Quartet, serving as their
hand-selected teaching assistant—the only wind player in the position’s history to hold that distinction.
Furuta is a Burkart Artist and performs exclusively on a handmade 9k gold Lilian Burkart flute.

Jon Dryden is a pianist, keyboardist, and composer based in Northern California. He is a lecturer in Jazz
Studies at San Jose State University and earned his M.A. in Jazz Studies there in 2016. His teachers
include Dr. Billy Taylor, Herb Pomeroy, John Bavicchi, and Burton Hathaway.
In 1991, Dryden moved to New York City, where he performed and recorded with violinist Michal
Urbaniak’s group Urbanator, alongside Lenny White, Kenny Garrett, and the Brecker Brothers. He
co-wrote “The Abyss” with White for the Renderers of Spirit album, featuring Michael Brecker and
Patrice Rushen. He has toured with Regina Carter, Bobby Previte, Patti Rothberg, Jesse Harris, and
others.
Dryden has performed or recorded with Norah Jones (The Little Willies), Natalie Merchant, Paula Cole,
and Charlie Louvin. His string arrangements appear on David Byrne’s Feelings and Paula Cole’s Harbinger.
He has composed music for Capitalism: A Love Story and The Hottest State, and appeared on shows like
Chappelle’s Show, Gullah Gullah Island, and The Late Late Show with Sara Ramirez.
He is the author of Reading Lead Sheets and The Pro Keyboardist’s Handbook (Alfred Music), and
remains an active performer and arranger throughout Northern California.
Ryan Trujillo is one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s leading jazz bassists and educators. He holds both
bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Jazz Studies from San Jose State University, where he studied under
John Shifflett and Dan Robbins. Trujillo combines deep musical knowledge, technical mastery, and a
passion for groove, improvisation, and expression.
Originally from Redding, California, he began his musical studies at Shasta College, where he co-founded
the school’s first jazz combo and portrayed the lead in Faust with the Shasta College Opera Theater. After
completing his associate degree, he transferred to San Jose State, where he performed with guest artist
Dee Dee Bridgewater, toured Cuba with the Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble, directed the SJSU Jazz Ensemble,
and performed Claude Bolling’s Concerto for Jazz Piano Trio and Orchestra with the university symphony.
Since graduating in 2022, Trujillo has become a fixture in the California jazz scene, performing regularly
with a wide range of groups and leading his own projects. He continues to study Latin American music
and culture and is active as a recording artist, educator, and performer.
He teaches privately and is faculty at East West Music and Dance, Opus 11, and both the San Jose Jazz
and Stanford Jazz education programs.
