Beneath A Tree (BAT) is a multi-genre ensemble led by violinist Gail Hernández Rosa and bassist Daniel Turkos. Founded in 2017 amid the vibrant music scene of Philadelphia and the rural pubs of Chester County, Pennsylvania, BAT began with lively performances blending folk, Celtic, bluegrass, and jazz with the elegance of the baroque.

Rooted in a shared passion for historical performance, BAT’s collaborations with adventurous musicians explore the intersections between composed and traditional music from the baroque era and its ongoing resonance today. The result is a curious and compelling fusion that bridges centuries and genres.

Since relocating to Northern California in 2018, BAT has flourished with performances and collaborations at the California Jazz Conservatory, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Herbst Theatre (as part of the American Bach Soloists Festival), San Francisco Early Music Society, Chamber Music Society of San Francisco, Mercury Soul, Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra, Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, and more. The ensemble also performs music meditations for wellness centers along the West Coast, grounding its artistry in community and connection.

In 2020, Hernández Rosa recorded My Cup of Tea in collaboration with BAT and Paul Holmes Morton at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. The album was praised by Early Music America and featured on WQXR’s Young Artist Showcase, KRCB, and KBBF. BAT has since appeared in the Early Music America 2021 Emerging Artist Showcase, Boston Early Music Fringe Festival, San Francisco Early Music Society Mini-Festival (2023), American Bach Soloists Festival (2019/2022), Green Music Center, Sebastopol Arts Center, Calliope East Bay Music & Arts, and InterMusic SF’s Music Day, among others.

Committed to education and outreach, BAT engages in community projects and collaborations with the Sonoma County School District, Davis High School, and Sonoma State University.

BAT was nominated for Best Early Music Ensemble, Favorite New Discovery, and Best Chamber Ensemble in the 2024 and 2025 San Francisco Classical Voice Audience Choice Awards, with Hernández Rosa winning Best Instrumental Recital (2025).

Upcoming projects include the release of BAT’s new album, Musings, recorded at Skywalker Sound and produced by Acis Productions and concert release performances January 2026.
